Communications Contests

Alaska State Communications Contest

For more than 30 years our Alaskan organization has offered members a contest in many categories of communications work--print journalism, public relations, broadcasting, writing for the web, and literary and educational pursuits.

First-place winners go on to national judging in the competition managed by the National Federation of Press Women. Judges are recognized experts in their field, or occasionally teachers in the field at the university level.

The contest is now open to Alaskans other than APC members. Entry fees are $20 per entry for members, $30 for nonmembers. In keeping with NFPW regulations, nonmembers who win first place in the Alaska contest must join APC if they want their entries to be sent forward to the national competition.

The entry deadline is February 5, 2009, for all materials. The 2009 contest is for work done in 2008. If you have questions about the contest after reading the rules and categories, please contact the Contest Coordinator, Carolyn Rinehart, at ccrinehart@gci.net.

High School Journalism Contest

In early 2009, Alaska Professional Communicators will solicit entries for its annual High School Journalism Contest. The contest is an opportunity for students to get feedback from professional journalists. Categories range from news to cartoons, and first place entries go on to be judged in the national student competition sponsored by National Federation of Press Women.

Check back in 2009 for the official entry form and rules.
